Water is a steel building's quietest enemy: slow leaks cause rust, rot and mould, and the roof is the first line of defence. Two details decide whether a roof drains well - the parapet and the gutter. This article explains how they work together.
1. The parapet: a wall that protects the edge
A parapet is the low wall rising above the roof edge. It hides the roof line, provides a fixing for the edge flashing, and in fire-separated buildings acts as a fire barrier between units. For steel buildings, parapets are typically steel framing with the same cladding as the walls, finished with coping flashing on top.
2. The gutter: where the water goes
The gutter collects roof runoff and carries it to downpipes. Gutter sizing must match the roof area and local rainfall intensity - a gutter too small overflows in a storm and dumps water behind the cladding.
3. The details that make or break a roof
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Gutter fall (slope) | Water must drain, not pool |
| Overflow provision | Prevents water backing under the roof sheet |
| Sealed joints | Leaks start at joints and end laps |
| Edge flashing / drip | Keeps water off the wall face |
| Parapet coping | Covers the parapet top against wind-driven rain |
| Expansion provision | Long gutters must allow thermal movement |
4. Cold-climate and heavy-rain notes
In snow regions, gutters can ice up; heated cables or wider gutters may be needed. In tropical storms, downpipes must handle short, violent downpours - your supplier should design to local rainfall data, not a default.
5. Maintenance
Gutters and parapet flashings need a yearly check: clear leaves, check seals, look for rust at laps. Small repairs are cheap; ignoring them turns a minor leak into a cladding and insulation problem.
In short: parapets and gutters are small elements with a big job - moving rainwater off the roof without letting it inside. Correct sizing, sealing and slope, matched to the local climate, protect the whole building for decades.
