Carbon steel is the skeleton of every steel building, but stainless steel is the specialist - used exactly where corrosion resistance and durability matter most. Understanding its role helps buyers make the right material choices and avoid either overspending or underspecifying.
1. Where stainless steel earns its place
Fasteners (bolts, screws, washers): in coastal or chemical environments, carbon steel fasteners rust and "freeze", making maintenance impossible.
Cladding flashings at coastlines: edge trims, cappings and drip edges take the worst weather.
Handrails and balustrades: visible, touched, exposed to rain and salt.
Roof penetrations and gutter fittings: around vents, skylights and gutters.
Food, pharmaceutical and clean industries: where hygiene and washdowns demand rust-free surfaces.
2. The main grades
A2 (304): general corrosion resistance, most common for fasteners and fittings.
A4 (316): better resistance to chlorides (sea salt, chemicals) - the coastal choice.
3. The economics: when it pays
Stainless costs 3–6 times more than carbon steel per kilo, but only small quantities are used. Spending a few hundred dollars on stainless fasteners can save thousands in maintenance and lost production later - in aggressive environments it is almost always worth it.
4. When carbon steel is fine
In dry, interior environments, properly coated carbon steel performs well at a fraction of the cost. The smart design uses carbon steel for structure and stainless only where exposure or hygiene demands it.
5. Check the certificate
Like structural steel, stainless should come with a material certificate confirming the grade (304 or 316). In coastal projects, specify A4 from the start.
In short: stainless steel is the specialist material for fasteners, flashings and exposed fittings in corrosive or hygienic environments. Used selectively, it prevents rust where it hurts most - at a cost that is small compared with the protection it buys.
