The roof profile you choose affects waterproofing, appearance, cost and service life. The two most common systems for steel buildings are corrugated (trapezoidal) sheeting and standing seam panels. This article compares them so buyers can choose with confidence.
1. The two systems
Corrugated / trapezoidal sheet: a simple profiled sheet fixed through the face with screws and sealing washers.
Standing seam: a panel with vertical, interlocking ribs, fixed by hidden clips, so there are no visible screws through the weather surface.
2. The comparison
| Factor | Corrugated sheet | Standing seam |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per m² | Lower | Higher |
| Waterproofing | Good, depends on washers | Excellent - no through-fasteners |
| Thermal movement | Limited | Handles large expansion/contraction |
| Wind uplift resistance | Good | Excellent (tested to high ratings) |
| Appearance | Industrial | Clean, architectural |
| Suitability | Warehouses, farms, budget projects | Large roofs, cold regions, coastal, architectural buildings |
3. When each wins
Corrugated wins when budget matters, the building is standard, and the climate is moderate.
Standing seam wins for large roof areas (thermal movement), high wind zones, heavy snow, coastal corrosion, and any building where a roof leak is unacceptable.
4. Underlay and insulation
Both systems are usually laid over insulation. Standing seam's hidden fasteners make it the better partner for premium insulation and long service life; corrugated with a proper vapour barrier performs well at lower cost.
5. Ask your supplier
What wind uplift rating does the roof have? What is the warranty on the paint or coating? How are the end laps sealed? Good answers mean a roof that stays dry for 30+ years.
In short: corrugated sheeting is the economical workhorse; standing seam is the premium choice for large, exposed or high-performance roofs. Match the profile to the climate, the building size and the budget - a competent supplier will guide the right balance.
